Frederick J. Furnivall (ed.)
Harrison&Apos;S Description of England in Shakespeare&Apos;S Youth: Being the Second and Third Books of His Description of Britaine and England.
London, N. Trubner and Co. for the New Shakspere Society , 1877-1881. Leather. A copiously illustrated and leather-bound copy of Furnivall's three part edition of Williams Harrison's 'Description of England', the second and third books of his 'Description of Britaine and England'; bound here in two volumes. Williams Harrison was an English clergyman best known for his 1577 'Description of England&apos. Originally published as part of Holinshed's 'Chronicles', the work recounted Elizabethan England's geographic, economic, social, religious and political features during the youth of William Shakespeare. This work was published by the New Shakspere Society, founded by Furnival in 1873. Furnivall used the archaic spelling of Shakespeare's name to distinguish his Society from Collier's earlier 'Shakespeare Society&apos. Volume I contains Part I, and Volume II contains Part II and Part III- The Supplement (published later than the other parts in 1881). With the bookplate of Roy and Nina Merley to the front pastedown of both volumes. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire. This is a stunning Grade I Tudor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbird eating a worm in the foreground. 'Series VI. No. 1' to verso of title page volume I. 'Series VI. No. 5' to verso of title page volume II. With nine folding plates (two of which are in colour) and six full page plates to volume II. Rebound in a half polished calf binding with cloth over boards. Externally rubbed to leather to joints, spine, and extremities. Fading to spine, and the odd handling marks to boards. Hinges slightly strained, but reasonably firm. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown to each volume. Newspaper clipping to half title page, volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities, but very bright and clean. The odd light scattered spot to the occasional plate, volume II. Library ink stamp and ink inscription to verso of title pages. Coloured folding plate of 'Old London Bridge' to volume II detached but present. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
