Phalaris; Thomas Francklin
The Epistles of Phalaris. Translated from the Greek. To Which Are Added, Some Select Epistles of the Most Eminent Greek Writers.
London, R. Francklin, 1749. . Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Pastel blue paper over boards, brown cloth-rebacking, with brown paper title label over spine. Scuffing to, rubbing of tips, edges, but new endpapers and tight bindings make this a particularly sturdy exemplar of an important work, drawing epistles from various ancient Greek and Roman sources; the attribution solely to Phalaris was show in 1699 by Richard Bentley (16776-1742) to have been spurious but does collect and render in English a book-full of epistles. The entirety of Bentley's dissertations is available in digital fashion at archive dot org . Full-page black-and-white engraving from 1747 at frontis depicting a recalcitrant soldier bound in heavy chains appearing in front of a military general. Half-title, title, page of dedication (to the Right Honourable John, Earl of Orrery), List of Subscribers' Names, The Preface, then The Oration of the Ambassadors of Phalaris, to the Priests of Delphos. Phalaris (570 B.C. - 554 B.C.) was considered a Tyrant of Acragas (Agrigentum) in Sicily and who was tasked with the building of the temple of Zeus Atabyrius in the citadel. In returne for great wealth and power he supplied the city with water, built fine buildings, and strengthened its walls and protection. He took over an island, declared himself Master of all under him and was then deposed by the people under the direction of Telemachus and then burned to death in a "brazen bull," a torture device. xxiii [2], 3-224 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
