The first edition in English of this work. Translated from the Persian by Duncan Forbes. Quarto. Half title and errata slip have been discarded. With a leaf from the Oriental Translation Fund presenting this copy to subscriber Peter Johnston Esq. Johnston of Carnsalloch, Dumfries was the Commissioner of Bankruptcy in England and Wales between 1784 and 1831. Six pages of advertisements to the rear of the work. The Adventures of Hatim Tai tells the story of the titular protagonist as he battles with dragons and master mountains to save a princess. The work is a classic romantic adventure story. A scarce first English edition of this classic story. In full calf. Rebacked. Hinges reinforced. Externally sound with rubbing to the joints and extremities. The odd mark to the boards. Internally firmly bound. An uncommon work, this being a 1855 new edition.This is a detailed linguistic work, exploring the Hindu language, it's history, and presenting it's grammar and vocabulary to the reader in a digestible form. Including the original characters alongside their romanisation, a selection of "easy extracts for reading", and more.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and fifteen plates.Collated, complete.By the linguist Duncan Forbes, who rose to become an eminent linguist and orientalist, despite being illiterate until the age of thirteen. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, cloth is a little faded, mostly to the spine. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spine, including ink marks to the rear board. Light bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Cracks to the head of the joints, heavier to the rear joint. Front hinge is a little strained, rear hinge is starting. Bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
