Fleeing England with her mother as an infant in the midst of the English Civil War, Henrietta moved to the court of her first cousin King Louis XIV of France. Later in life Henrietta played an instrumental role in negotiating the Secret Treaty of Dover between France and England against the Dutch Republic in June 1670. Written by Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, Comtesse de La Fayette, better known as Madame de La Fayette, a French writer who was asked to write this biography by Henrietta herself. With an introduction from Anatole France, a French poet, journalist, and novelist. Bound in quarter crushed morocco with patterned boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Cracks to the joints. Front hinge starting but firm.
