Windsor, VT, 1881. [4] pp. Bifolium. 5 x 7.5 inches. Dated Windsor, Vermont, October 25, 1881, and written on"Runnemede" stationary, the name of his summer estate, William M. Evarts expresses his regret to President of the Latin School Association, Charles K. Dillaway, for declining the invitation to speak at this school engagement. William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901) was an alumni of the Boston Latin School, who went on to serve as Attorney General, Secretary of State, and later as a U.S. Senator from New York. At the time of this letter he had just left his position as Secretary of State for Rutherford B. Hayes: "I am expecting to resume my professional employments without delay and my experience has shown me the embarrassment that arises from engagements made so far in advance as to make it impossible to foresee impediments that may prove insurmountable.. Very good, faint marginal soiling.

Hanover, NH, J.B. Parker, 1874. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff wrappers. 30pp. Very good. Age toning, mainly to outer wrappers. Uncmmon first edition of this typical eulogy fare, focusing of course on the Civil War years. Tipped to top of front wrapper is a fine example of Evarts' full bold signature (below which he adds "President") on a 3" X 1" slip. Evarts (1818-1901) served as Johnson's attorney general and Hayes' secretary of state before serving New York in the U.S. Senate. Salmon P. Chase (1808-73) served Ohio as governor and senator before becoming Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury and finally the sixth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1864-73). Not in Sabin. .

This powerful New York senator (1885-91) also served as U.S. attorney general (1868-69) and secretary of state (1877-81); he served as chief defense counsel in President Johnson's impeachment proceedings and as president of the New York City bar association spearheaded a reform movement in response to the "Tweed Ring" scandal. Bold signature from closing of LS (preceded by "I am yours very truly" and followed by "W.H. Michael, Esq." in another hand), 4½" X 1 3/4" slip, n.p. n.y. Very good. Bit of mild uneven age toning. Accompanied by a superb steel-engraved portrait, 5 3/4" X 8½", n.p. n.y. Near fine. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a steely-eyed Evarts gazing to the viewer's left, with facsimile signature beneath. A handsome pair. .
