Reliure d'édition de plein cartonnage prune, filets gras et maigres à froid portés sur les plats, fleurons angulaires à froid, dos lisse orné d'un large fleuron doré, filets gras et maigres dorés, titre doré, palette dorée en tête et queue. Edition originale de la traduction française. Elle s'ouvre sur un frontispice en couleurs et est en outre complète de ses 10 planches gravées. L'ouvrage s'agrémente par ailleurs de nombreuses figures dans le texte. 'J'ai ici consigné les faits si peu connus de l'embryologie humaine et leur explication étiologique exposant ainsi les principes de l'évolution de l'homme. Cet ouvrage constitue le premier essai tenté pour exposer l'ontogénie et la phylogénie humaines dans leur connexion étiologique''. Après une introduction historique traitant de l'histoire des théories de l'évolution,Haeckell examine l'histoire de l'embryon humain, en présentant l'ovule, la fécondation, la disposition des feuillets embryonnaires et la circulation sanguine dans le sens de l'ontogenèse. La troisième section traite de la phylogénie. Dans cette partie, l'auteur présente d'abord des vertébrés simples, puis différentes étapes de la lignée des ancêtres de l'Homme. La quatrième section traite de l'évolution des systèmes d'organes (groupes d'organes fonctionnant ensemble): la peau, le système nerveux, le système sensoriel, le système moteur, le système intestinal, le système cardiovasculaire et le système urogénital. Enfin, l'ouvrage se termine par un chapitre récapitulatif, dans lequel Haeckel réfute la conception duale, en particulier les croyances créationnistes et l'idée de fonctions cérébrales indépendantes de l'âme. Dos passé. Petits défauts affectant coiffes et angles. Quelques rousseurs dans le corps d'ouvrage ; principalement marginales. Du reste, belle condition.

The plates show corals (2), an Arabic tent camp, and the sunset over the Sinai Peninsula, as well as a genealogical tree of corals.Haeckel (1834-1919), the great biologist, was the first German to adopt the doctrine of evolution and was known as the “Darwin of Germany”. On his journeys, he used to collect the material for his research. In 1873 he went to Egypt and Asia Minor; the culmination of this journey was a visit to the splendid coral banks of Tur in the Red Sea. The Khedive, Ismail Pasha (to whom the book is dedicated in appreciation), put a Government steamer at Haeckel’s disposal for the journey. The excursion has been superbly described by the author himself in this book. It also contains the first specimens of his landscapes in watercolour.Printed title-page has autograph ink ownership of the German painter Elisabeth Engler (1875-1959), best known for painting Haeckel’s portrait in 1897, with her note “Geschenk des Verfassers 1898” (“gift of the author 1898”) and presentation inscription to the famous collector Hans Conrad Bodmer (1881-1956), dated 1935. Binding insignificantly rubbed; extremeties slighly bumped. Interior a little browned or foxed in places, occasionally more so; plates affected mostly in the blank margins, but lithographed title and one plate affected throughout.
