Emile Erckmann; Alexandre Chatrian, Waterloo Suite Du Conscrit de 1813
Emile Erckmann; Alexandre Chatrian
Waterloo Suite Du Conscrit de 1813
Paris, J Hetzel et A Lacroix, c1865. Cloth. A collaborative fiction work on the battle of Waterloo from the library of Cefntilla Court which belonged to Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan. The thirteenth edition of this work. Written by Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chartrian who wrote many works together under the name Erckmann-Chatrian. They specialised in military fiction and ghost stories. Their supernatural writings often received praise from the likes of HP Lovecraft and MR James. Their historical writings are known to attack the Second Empire in anti-monarchist terms. This particular work of fiction was the sequel to their 1864 work 'Histoire d'un Conscrit de 1813&apos. In the original French. Undated, dated using Copac, which has listings citing the fifteenth edition as 1865. With the bookplate of Cefntilla Court which belonged to Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan. Following the death of his father, 1st Baron Raglan, a large group of his friends, admirers and comrades purchased the house and estate as a memorial to him. This book therefore belonged to the estate of Raglan's family. Raglan served in many military campaigns such as the Peninsular War and the Hundred Days. At Waterloo Raglan served on Wellington's staff. He later became the commander of the British troops sent to Crimea in 1854. Whilst in Crimea he was ordered to besiege Sevastopol. His command lead to the fateful Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. A smart example of French military fiction centering on the Napoleonic Wars. Rebound, in a cloth binding. Externally, very smart with just some minor shelfwear to the boards and spine. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with occasional scattered spots to pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
