Beautiful marbled paper over boards, contemporary leather-backed, with raised bands, rich friezes and gold titles on burgundy leather gusset on spine, with five fleurs-de-lis. Marbled endpapers. Generally clean, unmarked interior, with moderate to heavy foxing here and there, light soiling to top edge. Scuffing to tips, edges, but binding tight, interior bright. XXIII [2], 2--249 [1] pp. Four fine black-and-white plates, including of an imagined Adam and Eve, complete with elephants, lions, cats, dogs and horse. Fine title page vignette, intaglio insignia of the Virgilian Colony (motto: tibi Mantua Palma).
