Daar ontmoette hij een ruim zeventigjarige vrouw, haar familie en de plaatselijke bevolking noemden haar Aama (moeder). Ze was Coburns hospita, maar ze behandelde hem ook als de zoon die ze nooit had gehad. In 1988 nodigde Coburn de inmiddels 84-jarige Aama uit om naar Amerika te komen om haar zijn land te laten zien. Het werd een ontroerende en dikwijls zeer humoristische onderneming. Door Aama's scherpzinnige en orginele waarnemingen, realiseert Coburn zich dat de toeristisch bedoelde tocht voor hem uitdraait op een emotionele en filosofische odyssee naar een beter begrip van zijn land, zijn cultuur en van zichzelf.
