Scarce edition of this oft-published work, which first appeared in 1773, being written by Chapone for her neice. Herein the author proposes "a course of self-education for women, in history, science, geography, and philosophy, as well as advocating the traditional virtues of politeness, economy, and religion. Sm. 8vo., First Edition thus, with an engraved frontispiece and 4 charming engraved plates by Rolls after Westall, some mild foxing (principally to plate margins); most attractively bound in mid-nineteenth century full polished blue calf, sides with broad and elaborate gilt frame border enclosing another in blind, back with five raised bands ruled in gilt, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments richly tooled in gilt, gilt dentelles and doublures, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, a delightful copy in well-preserved period binding. Well printed by Whittingham at the Chiswick Press. With the nineteenth century trade ticket of Guy of Chelmsford on front paste-down.Hester Chapone (1727-1801), author and blue-stocking, was a close friend of Richardson and Gilbert White. An active intellectual, she was a regular participant in London's literary salons alongside Vesey, Montagu, Ord and More. First published in 1774, her 'Letters on the Mind' (as they came to be known) were held in high esteem. They were followed by 'A Letter to a New-Married Lady' in 1777.See CBEL II, 843.

The first Westall edition. Bound in full crushed morocco with gilt detailing. Endpapers renewed and half title retained. The first edition to contain illustrations by English painter and portrait artist, Richard Westall. With four plates and a frontispiece.Collated, complete. A collection of letters on the conduct of women, reviewing subjects such as the principles of religion, the study of the Holy scripture, the regulation of the heart and affections, the government of the temper, the economy, politeness and accomplishments, manner, the course of reading history, and more. This work was originally written for Chapone's 15-year-old niece to encourage her in her studies. Written by Hester Chapone, an English writer of conduct books for women who became associated with the London Bluestockings. Bound in full crushed morocco with gilt detailing. Endpapers renewed and half title retained. Externally, very good, with light rubbing to the extremities and joints. Front hinge is a touch strained, but holding firm. Internally, the final 50 pages are strained, with a split between p144-5, cords visible. Otherwise firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just a few spots to the first few pages. Good . A small pocket book containing Hester Chapone's widely praised 'Letters on the Improvement of the Mind' together with John Gregory's 'A Father's Legacy to his Daughters&apos. Bound in full tree calf. With a frontispiece and title page engraving. Chapone's 'Letters' were originally written for her niece in 1773 and focused on encouraging rational understanding through the reading of the Bible, history and literature. Paired with the height of popularity for this genre of self-improvement books, the work went through numerous editions. 'A Father's Legacy' was written by Dr Gregory after the death of his wife in 1761, wishing to honour her memory and record his thoughts on female education.
