Arnauld, Pierre (essay); Marla Prather; Alexander Calder, Alexander Calder, 1898 - 1976
Arnauld, Pierre (essay); Marla Prather; Alexander Calder
Alexander Calder, 1898 - 1976
Washington, DC / New Haven, Connecticut, National Gallery of Art / Yale University Press, 1998. Hardcover. Black cloth, grey ill. DJ. 366 pp. Numerous bw and 267 color plates. The striking mobile sculptures of Alexander Calder are among the most notable and original creations of twentieth-century art. Combining for the first time movement and sculpture, these works represent a new and highly influential departure from the practices of the past. Yet Calder's work ranges much more widely. This lavishly illustrated book reflects the full diversity of Calder's oeuvre and explores an outstanding selection of more than two hundred of his works.Based on access to family archives, an overview of Calder's entire career, and contributions from the artist's grandson Alexander S. C. Rower, this book for the first time presents the artist in a serious light and proper historical context.Without ignoring the playful and whimsical dimension of his work, the book emphasizes Calder's role as one of the great formal innovators of the century. Each work of art selected from those produced during his prolific career is reproduced here in color and is accompanied by comparative works, informative essays, and extensive chronology. This book is the catalogue of a major centenary exhibit that opens at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. on March 29, 1998 and then travels to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. VG/VG (light scuffs & smudges to boards; light sunning to upper edges of boards. may have small, coffee-like spot to lower textblock. dj has rubbed edge-wear, scuffs & scraches) .

New York: Perls Gallery, 1959. 8vo. [Oblong], French Fold Sheets, Deckled Laid Paper, Very Good. Illustrated Cover. Scarce. [4 pp.]. The Perls Gallery in New York was founded in 1937 by Klaus Gunther Perls (1912-2008) and his brother, Franz R. Perls,(1910-1975), after having worked at their mother's Galerie Kate Perls in Paris. Following his marriage to Amelia Blumenthal of Philadelphia in 1940 , Klaus and Amelia B. Perls jointly ran the gallery. They specialized in modern French painting while Franz established the Frank Perls Gallery in Beverly Hills He originally dealt in works by Maurice Utrillo, Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy that his mother sent from Paris, until the Nazi occupation. When she was forced to flee France, he began dealing in now little known contemporary American artists, including Darrel Austin, and in Mexican and South American art such as Mario Carreno. After the war, Klaus again dealt in French art from the School of Paris Artists in the Perls' stable included Rouault, Picasso, Léger, Derain, Dufy, Matisse, Modigliani, Pascin, Soutine and Vlaminck. The Perls Galleries closed in 1997. .
