Arabian Nights: The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night. Enexpurgated
Collector's Library editions, 2007. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 527. These are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: a thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever. Full of mischief, valor, ribaldry, and romance, The Arabian Nights has enthralled readers for centuries. This volume contains the most famous and representative stories from Sir Richard F. Burton's multi volume translation, and, unlike many editions, is complete unexpurgated. These tales, including 'Aladdin or the Wonderful Lamp', 'Sinbad the Sailor', and 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves', have entered into the popular imagination. This beautiful, oversized hardcover edition of The Arabian Nights brings together the magical translation of Sir Richard Burton and the art of William Harvey. He was Thomas Bewick's most famous pupil and his evocative black and white woodcuts are complemented by the delightful engravings of the renowned brothers Thomas Dalziel and Edward Dalziel who were strongly influenced by Sir John Gilbert, and who regarded their illustrations for The Arabian Nights as their finest work. Bold to a fault, Richard Burton travelled to Mecca, explored the African Great Lakes, shocked his readers with his candid travel accounts, and gained fame and riches with his translation of the Arabian Nights. The first edition was published in 1885-1888 and re-issued by the Burton Club shortly thereafter. The present edition is a reprint of the first Burton Club edition, illustrated with, among others, Albert Letchford's famous plates. Spines slightly faded. Fine set, uncut and partly unopened.

Includes the seven volume supplement and Index. Lacking only Volume One. "A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights' Entertaainments, now entitled The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night, with Introduction, Explanatory Notes on the Manners and Customs of Moslem Men, and a Terminal Essay upon the History of the Nights." The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night (1888), is the only complete English language translation of One Thousand and One Nights to date – a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age (8th-13th centuries) – by the British explorer and Arabist Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890). It stood as the only complete translation of the Macnaghten or Calcutta II edition (Egyptian recension) of the "Arabian Nights." Burton's translation was one of two unabridged and unexpurgated English translations done in the 1880s; the first was by John Payne, under the title The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (1882–1884, nine volumes). Burton's ten volume version was published almost immediately afterward with a slightly different title. This, along with the fact that Burton closely advised Payne and partially based his books on Payne's, led later to charges of plagiarism. Owing to the sexual imagery in the source texts (which Burton made a special study of, adding extensive footnotes and appendices on "Oriental" sexual mores) and to the strict Victorian laws on obscene material, both translations were printed as private editions for subscribers only, rather than being published in the usual manner. Burton's original ten volumes were followed by a further seven entitled The Supplemental Nights to the Thousand Nights and a Night (1886–1888). Burton's 17 volumes, while boasting many prominent admirers, have been criticised for their "archaic language and extravagant idiom" and "obsessive focus on sexuality"; they have even been called an "eccentric ego-trip" and a "highly personal reworking of the text." His voluminous and obscurely detailed notes and appendices have been characterised as “obtrusive, kinky and highly personal”. Spines moderately worn with some soiling on a few, labels mildly worn and soiled; all 16 volumes unmarked, tight, square, and clean. An extremely large and heavy set (approximately 40 pounds) - additional shipping charges may apply. VERY GOOD.. Color and B&W Illustrations. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued .

Falconry in the valley of the Indus.London, Van Voorst, 1852. 8vo. With a tinted lithographed frontispiece, 3 plates and with an 8-page publisher’s catalogue at the end. Original publisher's cloth.
[16], 107, [1]; 8 pp.First edition with an inscription by the author, of a "well written" (Harting) work on traditional falconry in India and Pakistan, by the great British orientalist and explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). After finishing his education at Oxford University, Burton enlisted in the East India Company and travelled all over India as a British officer in the colonial army. He was known for having an immense talent for languages and during his seven years of service he learned, among other things, Sanskrit. He made use of this skill by translating the Kamasutra into English for the first time. The practice of falconry by the Sindhis (native people of Sindh in Pakistan) apparently impressed him greatly when he was travelling in that region. This inspired him to write the present work on the traditional way of falconry in Sindh culture. Falconry as a sport was at that moment beginning to regain popularity in England. Burton dedicated his work to King Willem III of The Netherlands, who was an avid falconer. Burton's work is as much a study of Sindhi culture as it is a work on falconry. The present first edition is very rare, and the surviving correspondence about it includes "an interesting letter from the publisher stating that of the 500 copies published 257 still (1877) remain unsold, and that he advises scrapping them" (Penzer). The half-title of the present copy is inscribed by the author in Arabic: "To the accursed captain from his friend Mirza Abdullah" (as Burton styled himself during his travels). Below the inscription is a pencil drawing (not by Burton) of the author's head imposed onto the body of a cat walking across a roof, captioned beneath in English (in a different hand, in ink): "a faithful sketch of the author". Head and foot of spine professionally repaired, binding slightly soiled. Light foxing in plate margins, occasional spotting elsewhere.l Harting 66; Penzer, p. 41; Schwerdt I, 90.
