[BROWN (Arthur) CARY (Henry) & HACKMAN (Alfred)]
Catalogus Librorum Impressorum Bibliothecae Bodleianae in Academia Oxoniensi. [With:] Catalogus Impressorum Librorum Quibus Aucta Est Bibliotheca Bodleiana, Annis MDCCCXXXV-MDCCCXLVII.
E Typographeo Academico, Oxford. 1843-51. 4 Vols., folio, x,834; [ii],924;[ ii],896; [iv],1024pp., from the library of Professor Birrell, with an attractive vignette on each title-page, later buckram, nice clean set. A monumental and influential catalogue which some thought should be the model for the new British Museum catalogue. The present exhibition is unique in including, at the special request of the participating museums, as many as sixty representative examples of applied art, such as metal and lacquer ware, ceramics, and textiles. In view of the fragility of age-old Japanese art treasures and other insuperable difficulties, I believe this exhibition is most representative, both in quality and quantity, and is worthy of fullfilling its mission in introducing to the American and Canadian public the development and flowering of Japanese art." excerpt from the foreword by Shunsaku Kawahara, Chairman, National Comission for Protection of Cultural Properties, Tokyo, March 20, 1965.
