BRODRICK, William St. John Fremantle (1856-1942)
Autograph Letter Signed
This English statesman, 1st Earl of Midleton and 9th Viscount Midleton, held a wide array of important positions: member of Parliament 1880-1906, Under-Secretary of State for War 1895-98, member of the Privy Council 1897, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1898-1900, Secretary of State for War 1900-03 and Secretary of State for India 1903-05. ALS, 3pp (lettersheet), 4½" X 7", n.p. 1905 July 12. Addressed to Lady Cowper. Near fine. On fine stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" seal on the first leaf, Brodrick chats with an aristocratic lady about social matters. Reads in part: "We were so sorry to hear of Ld. Cowper's illness & trust he is really better. It must be such an anxiety.." Bold and attractive. This came from the collection of Albert Johannsen, author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" (University of Oklahoma Press, 1950), the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder, bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label (partly filled in by Johannsen), accompanies this item. .

William Brodrick
The Gardens Of The Dead
Little Brown 2006 Hardback, 352pp. In his acclaimed debut, The Sixth Lamentation, William Brodrick introduced one of the mystery genre’s most indelible heroes: Father Anselm, English barrister-turned-monk. Marking his triumphant return, The Gardens of the Dead begins with the unexpected death of a former colleague of Anselm’s who had reopened an old case—one in which Anselm featured prominently. The monk, soon immersed in a mystery that sheds light on the darkest corners of London’s judicial system, finds himself confronting age-old questions: What is justice? What, ultimately, is evil? Psychologically complex and suspenseful, this atmospheric novel establishes William Brodrick as a singular writing talent. Ex Library; DJ. (ISBN: 9780316724661). Good.

William Brodrick
The Sixth Lamentation
Little, Brown 2003 Paperback, 384pp. Larkwood Priory, Suffolk. It is following his afternoon confessions that Father Anselm is stopped by an old man in the nave. What, he is asked, should a man do when the world has turned against him? Anselm's response, to claim sanctuary is to have greater resonance than he ever could have imagined. For that evening the old man returns, demanding the protection of the Church. His name is Eduard Schwermann and he is wanted by the police as a suspected Nazi war criminal. With her life runningout, Agnes Aubret feels it is time to unburden to her granddaughter Lucy the secrets she has been carrying for so long. Fifty years earlier, Agnes was in Occupied Paris, a member of a small group risking their lives to smuggle Jewish children to safety - until her group was exposed by a young SS officer: Eduard Schwermann. But as Father Anselm discovers, history is more slippery, more complicated than it first appears. For not only has the Church granted Schwermann sanctuary before, in 1944 it helped him escape from France to begin a new life in Britain. As Anselm attempts to find out why, and as Lucy's search into her grandmother's past continues, their investigations dovetail to reveal a remarkable story. (ISBN: 9780316861625). Good.

[10], 171, [1] pp.Second edition, revised and enlarged: the best edition of this handsome work. The present copy, with an impeccable provenance, is enriched by the inclusion of 3 fine original watercolours by the eminent William Brodrick (1814-88), falconer, taxidermist, physician and artist, whose works of avian portraiture set the standard of his times. The first edition was published in 1855. The author, Francis Henry Salvin (1817-1904), was not satisfied with the first edition, so he made improvements and important additions. The resulting second edition must be preferred to the first, and Salvin wanted to leave no doubt that it would be the best modern book on falconry even written in England. It indeed remains even today an essential standard work. To illustrate the second edition new lithographs had to be made from scratch, because the stones that were used to illustrate the first edition were destroyed. The ornithological artist William Brodrick took up the task once more and apparently made some drawings for it that did not make the edition, but his original watercolour drawings are included in the present copy. These are, according to inscriptions by Brodrick himself: a saker (barred variety, 2 year old female); a 5 year old Dutchess falcon belonging to J. Pells; Comet, a 4 year old tierce. With an inscription in ink on the front free endpaper: "Wm. Brodrick, Little Hill, 1873" and a partially erased pencil inscription on the title-page. Occasional spotting, heavier in the endpapers and half-title, but still in very good condition. Spine faded to brown, corners worn, rubbed.l Harting 67; Nissen IVB 147; Schwerdt II, 145.

The treatise is illustrated with lithographs by William Brodrick (1814-1888); they show 21 falcons and 5 hawks; plates 22-24 depict equipment used for falconry.
