Religious Tract Society,, [1858]. 12mo., First Edition, with an engraved frontispiece and numerous engraved illustrations in the text, some very light and occasional age-staining, wanting free endpapers, neat contemporary inscription on front paste-down; original blue cloth, upper board and backstrip elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt and blind, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers, case a little shaken else a bright, firm copy. With the binder's ticket of Lewis & Sons of Gough Square, London on rear paste-down, and 10pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. The first appearance of this popular tale that was reissued many times across the last half of the nineteenth century. The engravings are uneven in quality; those signed by Geo. Meason are by far the best. The first edition is scarce.

An account of the life of Bernard Palissy, a French Huguenot potter, hydraulics engineer and craftsman, gathered from collections of his own writings. Palissy was best known for his sixteen year struggle to imitate Chinese porcelain. Written by Cecilia Lucy Brightwell, an English etcher and writer. Bound by Lewis & Sons, London. Dated from the British Library. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound with front free endpaper detached. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown. Bound by Lewis & Sons, London. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
