The first edition of this uncommon work in the publisher's original paper wraps. Robert Seymour Bridges (1844-1930) was Poet Laureate from 1913 to 1930. He achieved literary fame late in life, and influenced a select circle. His Christian faith underpinned much of his poetry, and makes an appearance in this speech, alongside philosophical contemplations, concerning the education of workers. The Workers' Educational Association, founded in 1903, is the UK's largest voluntary provider of adult education, delivering learning throughout England and Scotland. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally smart, though a little creased to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. This book is a review copy, with two paper slips loosely inserted from the Manchester Guardian and Mr Milford. Included in this edition are two of Robert Bridge's essays, 'The Poems of Mary Coleridge', and 'Lord de Tabley's Poems&apos. Bridges was the poet laureate from 1913 until his death in 1930, after becoming a poet later on in his life after a career as a doctor. He's known for writing Christian works, publishing many popular hymns, as well as translating historic hymns. Mary Coleridge was a poet, novelist, essayist, and teacher. Bridges describes her poems as being 'beautiful' and 'mystical&apos. She and her family were close friends with many poets, including Alfred Tennyson, Fanny Kemle, and Robert Browning. She's best known for her novel 'The King with Two Faces&apos. Lord de Tabley, or John Warren, was a poet and botanist, as well as being an authority on bookplates. He was also a close friend of Alfred Tennyson, though he spent ten years a recluse until his succession to his barony and estates. Warren often published his poems under a pseudonym, including 'G. F. Preston', and 'William Lancaster&apos. In the original publisher's half cloth binding, with paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light discolouration to the joints and to the head of boards due to sunning. Small markings to the rear board. A little fading to the spine. A small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd scattered spotting throughout.
