[c.1918]. 8vo., with a frontispiece and 5 plates, free endpapers moderately browned, neat prize inscription dated 1922 on front free endpaper; original blue pictorial cloth, upper board and backstrip elaborately blocked and lettered in yellow, green and black to a design of a Roundhead mounted cavalryman facing a fortress, top and fore-edges lightly dust-soiled else a very good, clean copy. With the trade ticket of W. Gamage of London on rear paste-down. Brereton's classic tale was first published in 1901 with eight plates by the same illustrator. Scarce in any edition.

An early edition of this work, dated from Jisc 1915. Captain Frederick Sadleir Brereton was a British Army officer and author of children's books on heroic deeds conducted in the name of the British Empire. This story follows that of a battle during the First Worlds War from Neuve Chapelle to Loos. Illustrated with all six plates by Arch. Webb. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front free endpaper. The cloth to the spine is slightly rubbed. The half title page is loose but present; Otherwise, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. The first edition. In a full calf prize binding from 'Lewisham School' with their crest on the front board. Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece and five monochrome plates by William Rainey. Collated complete. This work was written by Frederick Sadleir Brereton, a British Army medical officer and author. Captain Brereton wrote many works set during war, with this work being set during the Afghan War. In a full calf prize binding with 'Lewisham School's' crest to the front. Externally very smart with fading to the spine and the odd slight mark to the board. Front hinge starting. Internally firmly bound with prize inscription in ink to the front blank dated 1908. Pages lightly age toned with the odd spot, heavier to the front and rear and minor tidemarks to the tail of pp.352 and the rear blanks. Very Good . Ill.: William Rainey. Very Good .
