This copy is particularly notable for its numerous woodcut illustrations.The fables included in this edition include: "Courtship", "The Taming of the Shrew", "Self-Esteem", "Simplicity Victorious", "Genius", "Conceit", "Billy and Bully", "Masher Bunnie", "Duped", "Crossed", "Diamond Cut Diamond", "Pride Goes Before a Fall", "The Ungrateful Cur", and "A Cool Reminder" to name a few.Mary Louisa Boyle (1810 – 1890) was an English writer and amateur actress who moved in the literary circles of Charles Dickens and Alfred, Lord Tennyson, with the later writing a poem about her "To Mary Boyle" (publ. 1889), and the former writing letters to her record several of her gifts to him, calling her "among the few whom I most care for and best love."Bound by Eric Sweet, a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking, reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style. Rebound in half calf with red cloth boards. Externally, very smart. Rubbing to spine and extremities. Fading to spine. One or two marks to boards. Endpapers slightly age toned with the odd spot. Internally, firmly bound.
