Complete in four volumes. First edition. Volumes one and two are illustrated with a colour frontispiece, fourteen colour plates, and numerous black-and-white images. Volumes three and four are illustrated with a colour frontispiece, fifteen colour plates, and numerous black-and-white images. Collated complete. A detailed history of maritime activities and our understanding of the oceans. With volume one (to 1696) containing chapters on the discovery of Britain, the Norman Conquest, the French Wars, ships and seamen, early explorers, and the opening of the East. Volume two (1698-1783) containing chapters on the War of Spanish Succession, Privateers, pirates and smugglers, and trade and shipping. Volume three (1784-1814) containing chapters on the rise of Napoleon, the ships of the period, and sea lawbreakers. Volume four (1815-1875) containing chapters on the European navies, the Atlantic ferry, the spread of steam, policing the seas, and pleasure sailing. Written by Frank Charles Bowen, an English researcher of maritime history and writer who joined the Royal Naval Brigade in 1914 and fought in the Dardanelles in the First World War. From 1916 to the end of the war he worked in Naval Intelligence, his depth of nautical knowledge was considered to be vital for the war effort. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound.
