Le Duc d'Aumale; Robert Brown Borthwick
History of the Princes de Conde in the Xvith and Xviith Centuries
London, Richard Bentley and Son, 1872. Leather. A very smart copy of this work on the history of French House of Bourbon-Conde, written by M. Le Duc d'Aumale. In Anson D.F. Randolph and Co. binding, with the binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper.This work is an historical account of the French House of Bourbon-Conde. The House of Bourbon-Conde was a French princely house and a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon. The name of the house was derived from the title of Prince of Conde that was originally assumed around 1557 by the French Protestant leader, Louis de Bourbon (1530–1569), uncle of King Henry IV of France, and borne by his male-line descendants. The first volume focuses on the origin of the Bourbons, and their history from 1530 to 1568, while the second volume focuses on the Bourbon-Conde history from 1568 to 1610.Each volume contains the bookplate of the previous owner, Nathanial W. Conkling. Uniformly bound in half morocco with marble covered boards. Externally, very smart, with rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper of each volume. Internally, front hinge to volume I is slightly tender but firm. Both volumes firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .

Coup De Grace
St. Martin's Press 2001 Paperback, 356pp. "Freshly minted Ph. D. Sarah Deane is hired to teach English at Miss Merritt's, only to land in the epicenter of legendary French professor Grace (Mme Guillotine") Carpentier's reign of terror. Mme's peckish passion for excellence has inspired universal fear and loathing. A student discovers Mme's hanging effigy. Then Sarah finds a bludgeoned body wearing Mme's trademark cape. But the victim is not Mme. Is it a case of mistaken identity? It's up to Sarah, raided by her husband Alex, to find the killer before he strikes again--while the prime suspects, three fractious students, and three furtive professors, follow her every move.", (ISBN: 9780312974497). Borthwick, A. B.
Egypt in a nutshell or a short guide to its natural history.
London, privately published, [ca. 1890]. Small folio (24 x 20 cm). With 16 illustrated text sheets after sketches by the author. Original gilt-decorated crocodile leather. All edges gilt. = Signed by the author, and most probably printed in a very limited edition. The sketches are both accurate and, often, humorous. The work is dedicated "to my husband and children...this little skit written during our first two months journey up the Nile". The author may be the suffragette, Alice Beatrice Borthwick, née Lister (1841-1898), who wrote "English Women as a Political Force" in The North American Review volume 145, issue 368 (July 1887). The gilt vignette on the front board shows a bee-like insect on top of the letter A, and the text: "Aide toi. Dieu t'aidera". No auction records found. Cover edges a bit rubbed, spine rubbed and a few small pieces missing, otherwise a very good copy. Rare.
