Chris Bonington
Boundless Horizons: The Autobiography Of Chris Bonington
Mountaineers Books 2000 Hardback, 687pp. In I Chose to Climb Bonington describes his initiation into climbing from his schoolboy beginnings to his successful ascents around the world, culminating in his, and the first British, ascent of the North Face of the Eiger. The story continues in The Next Horizon where Bonington describes his development as a mountaineer, photographer, journalist, and expedition leader, and ends with his preparations for the 1972 Everest Expedition. In the final volume, The Everest Years, Bonington chronicles his four expeditions to the world's highest peak and his crowning achievement when he reached the summit of Everest in 1976. With characteristic warmth and enthusiasm, Bonington covers half a century of mountaineering at the highest level, offering insight into a charismatic generation of climbing personalities, his friends, and his own development into the devoted family man and celebrity he is today. DJ; Heavy. DJ worn along the edges and torn on upper left, otherwise good throughout. (ISBN: 9780898867558). Good.

Bonington, Sir Chris
Everest the Hard Way
VGC. Hodder & Stoughton, 1976. First UK edition. Large format blue hardback(gilt lettering to the spine, light shelf wear on the edges of the cover) with Dj(small tear, creases, nicks on the edges of the Dj cover), both in VGC. Illustrated with a b/w map of Everest inside the front and back cover, full colour, b/w photos, drawings, maps, tables. Nice and clean pages with a mark and light shelf wear on the outer edges, some foxing marks on the edges of the pages, foxing marks and slightly yellow inside the Dj cover, small mark on the back cover. The book is in VGC for its age with light shelf wear. Foreword by Lord Hunt. 239pp including List of illustrations, Appendices 1 to 11, index. A collectable first edition. Heavy book(approx. 1. 3 Kg). Review: The hard way up Everest is the steep, towering, unclimbable South West Face which has a 1000-foot band of bare rock and defied six expeditions. Until Bonlngton's 1975 crew attacked the Face, all others had been sidetracked at the last minute and taken one of the less difficult ridges. Even his 1972 group was turned back by monsoon weather. The success of the latest team seems to have been a surmounting of giant egos as well as impossible difficulties - but for all, including the reader, there are some walloping moments of undiluted joy, particularly when the first two team members straddle the small topmost ridge and take in the incredible sights - Everest's purple 200-mile shadow, black storm clouds rolling far below. (Think of sitting on a rock five miles straight up. ) Just as spellbinding are the hallucinations (?): an utter stranger watching a climber on the peak from a few feet away; the mind dividing in three, one part a guiding voice outside the climber; and similar psychic events. The elation of success is offset by the tragic loss of the expedition's cameraman, who gets lost in a sudden mist and is never seen again. Stripped, raw storytelling, with some humor; 125 pages of appendices about equipment. Very Good/Very Good. ISBN: 9780340208335
