Thomas Ingoldsby Esq. [Richard Harris Barnham]; Mrs. Edward A. Bond [editor], The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels
Thomas Ingoldsby Esq. [Richard Harris Barnham]; Mrs. Edward A. Bond [editor]
The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels
London, Richard Bentley and Son, 1894. Cloth. A smart set of Richard Harris Barham's popular collection of fantastical short stories, illustrated throughout. Complete in three volumes. Volume one is illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title page, and twenty-five plates. Volume two is illustrated with a vignette title page, eight plates, and numerous in-text images. Volume three is illustrated with a vignette title page, seven plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. A delightful collection of whimsical legends, myths, and ghost stories written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually the pen-name of clergyman Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. The work proved immensely popular and has been referenced in literary works by H.G. Wells, Henry James, and Rudyard Kipling. Illustrated by Cruikshank, Leech, Tenniel, and more. Edited by his daughter, Mrs. Edward A. Bond. Bound in full cloth. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light scattered spotting to the endpapers. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
