A hardcover book handsomely bound in full tree calf with ornate gilt decorations on the spine, boards, and dentelles. The foredges are fully gilt, still quite glossy and smooth, and the endpapers are marbled. Edges of spine and boards mildly chafed. Tiny dent in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. Early owner's signature on a blank front endpaper, dated 1893. The top corner of page 31-32 is chipped off at the very tip. Otherwise, pages clean and bright and binding quite secure. A very good copy in collectible condition! Illustrated by C.W. Cope, Thomas Creswick, J.C. Horsley, R. Redgrave, and Frederick Tayler. .

London, Hakluyt. 1914, First Edition. Blue Cloth, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book, 3 volumes published 1914, 1916, 1920. lxxxviii, 363; xlvii, 521; xlix, 271 pages, all plates and maps present. Also included is an offprint: The Rule of Don Manuel de Amat. Viceroy of Peru by B. Glanvill Corney. (7 pages, from Proceedings of the XVIII international congress of americanists). Some wrormholing in volumes 1 and 2. This is mainly restricted to the gutters of the endpapers with just a few wormholes going a little further, text is not effected, small darkened area bottom of spine of vol. 2. All 3 volumes have dedications by Dr. Corney to James Lyle Young. These dedications are dated the same year as the publication date. The books seem to have been sent to Lyle Young by Corney as soon as they were published. Lyle Young was a Pacific trader who traded mainly in Melanesia and later settled in Papeete. These volumes are very hard to find separately and even harder as a complete set. Good. Signed by Author(s).

'The Seasons' is a series comprising four poems, each titled after a season; the completed collection first appeared in 1730, and inspired works by Joseph Haydn, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and J. M. W. Turner.Written by James Thomson (1700-1748), a British poet and playwright, known for having written the words of 'Rule, Britannia', as well as 'The Seasons' and 'The Castle of Indolence&apos. This was his most influential work.With a life of the author by Patrick Mulroch.Richly illustrated with engravings by various hands. A lovely leather-bound copy of this work. In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart; rubbed to the raised bands, the head of the spine, the extremities and joints. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a little strain to the front hinge. Pages have the odd spot; endpapers and pastedowns are rather spotted. Very Good . Ill.: John Bell, C. W.
