BLUNDEN Edmund
Undertones of War. BRIGHT COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER
Collins,, [1965]. 8vo., First Edition thus, endpapers and edges lightly spotted; original holland cloth, backstrip blocked in black and lettered in gilt, a good, firm copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter sunned at backstrip and chipped with minor loss (not affecting lettering) at head and tail of backstrip. Blunden's classic memoir was first published in 1928. A good, sound copy of the first modern edition of one of the two greatest personal memoirs of the Western Front in WWI (the other being Sassoon's 'Memoirs of an Infantry Officer'). Falls, p.182 'probably the only single book of its kind we have had in English which really reaches the stature of its subject...An almost perfect picture of the small events which make up the siege warfare of France and Flanders'. (Sassoon's memoir was published just too late for inclusion). Enser, p.258; Kirkpatrick, A28a (recording the first edition).
