Bishop Burnet, Bishop Burnet&Apos;S History of His Own Time Volumes I - VI
Bishop Burnet
Bishop Burnet&Apos;S History of His Own Time Volumes I - VI
Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1823. Leather. A bright, clean complete set of the 1823 edition of Burnet's History of His Own Time. Bound in half-leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and decoration. With the Suppressed Passages of the First Volume, and Notes by the Earl of Dartmouth and Hardwicke, and Speaker Onslow, hitherto Unpublished. To which are added The Cursory Remarks of Swift, and other observations. With a bookseller's label for 'W. J. Sackett' on the front pastedown. With a nameplate for 'Reginald Thornton' on the front pastedown. Gilbert Burnet, 1643 – 1715, was a Scottish theologian and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric, a preacher, and an academic, as well as a writer and historian. He was educated by his father, and at the University of Aberdeen, where he earned a Master of Arts in Philosophy at the age of thirteen. He earned his Doctor of Divinity by eighteen. He travelled England and Europe for several years and in 1665 returned to be ordained by the Bishop of Edinburgh. In 1669 he accepted the vacant chair of Divinity at the University of Glasgow. With the unsettled political times, he left the University in 1674 and moved to London. In London, his political and religious sentiments prompted him to support the Whigs. His energetic and bustling character led him to take an active part in the controversies of the time, and he endeavoured to bring about reconciliation between Episcopacy and Presbytery. Burnet"s later life was marked by King"s favours, religious controversy, and a self-exile which included some time at The Hague, as William III"s personal chaplain and later a trusted advisor to Queen Mary. As the Dictionary of National Biography tells us, as an author "Burnet can be reckoned as one of the most prolific and substantial of his day. In his lifetime he published more than 140 works, ranging from sermons and short polemics to major works of theology, biography, and history. More important, unlike most authors his works were rarely ignored." Bound in half-calf bindings with marbled paper-covered boards. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping and rubbing. There is an ink stamp on the front blank, and an ink signature on the title page, of each volume. Bindings are tight and firm. Internally the pages are bright and generally clean. There are the occasional spots, that are most prominent on the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

¶ Ex-libris ‘puro de fonte Spring Casborne’, Rev John Spring Casborne of Newe House in the village of Pakenham, Suffolk. Newe House was built in 1622 by Sir Robert Bright, in the late 1640s it was sold to Sir William Spring, who had been a prominent Parliamentarian during the Civil War. The house remained in the Spring family until the mid-nineteenth century, being used as the family dower house. The Spring family coat-of-arms is still apparent above the main door to the manor. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), B5792; Gilbert Burnet (1643–1715), bishop of Salisbury and historian. ‘... In the meantime, in autumn 1699 Burnet had published An Exposition of the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England. The Exposition could be considered the logical extension of Burnet's discourse on the Trinity. In it he applied a latitudinarian epistemology not just to the Trinity, but to all the doctrinal articles of the church. It was also intimately connected with his History of the Reformation. If his History of the Reformation was an attempt to rewrite English church history from the perspective of a late seventeenth-century latitudinarian divine, then his Exposition was its theological counterpart. Burnet himself described his Exposition as a 'proper addition to the History of the Reformation, to explain and prove the doctrine that was then established' (Bishop Burnet's History, 658). As the logical extension of both his Four Discourses and his History of the Reformation, the Exposition was one of Burnet's most important works, and one which the high-church party could hardly ignore for long ...’ ODNB
