Ambrose Bierce
The Monk and the Hangman&Apos;S Daughter, Fantastic Fables
New York, Albert & Charles Boni, 1926. Cloth. A collection of fables by Ambrose Bierce, including the tale of a monk and his relationship with a hangman's daughter. The second printing of this collection of fables published by Albert & Charles Boni. 'The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter' was first published by Sampson Low, Marston & Company in the late 1800s. In the publisher's original cloth. Lacking the original very scarce dust wrapper. This collection of fables was written by Ambrose Bierce, an American short story writer and American Civil War veteran, best known for his novel 'The Devil's Dictionary&apos. This collection of fables contains 'The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter', a tale about a Monk who meets a young girl who is shunned by the community for being the hangman's daughter, who he then becomes close to. The story was inspired by Richard Voss' German tale, 'Der MÃ
¶ nch von Berchtesgaden', and was first written and translated from that German tale, by Adolphe De Castro, who took the tale to Ambrose Bierce to rework and improve. The story originally had a happy ending, but was changed the ending to a tragic one, and though the idea of retaining its happy ending was broached to Bierce by Castro, he refused. In the publisher's original cloth, lacking the original dust wrapper. Externally excellent with fading to the spine and slight bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound with clean and lightly age toned pages, with very minor tidemarks to the head of the pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
