Angus Wilson
Hemlock And After
Grafton 1987 Paperback. A novel about one mans life and career. The main theme is the contradiction between the need for authority and the distaste for power. It is also the choice between fighting cruelty and falsehood by passive resistance or by direct action. (ISBN: 9780586049037). Good.

Angus Wilson, The Wrong Set and Other Stories; Hemlock and After; a Bit Off the Map
Angus Wilson
The Wrong Set and Other Stories; Hemlock and After; a Bit Off the Map
London, Secker and Warburg, 1949-1957. First edition. Cloth. A brilliant trio of works from Angus Wilson, including the first edition of his first published novel, and two of his acclaimed short story collections. Two first editions of 'Hemlock and After' and 'A Bit Off the Map', and the second impression of 'The Wrong Set', published the month after the first. With the publisher's original dust wrappers, 'The Wrong Set' being price-clipped. A delightful selection of works from English novelist and short-story writer, Angus Wilson. Many of his themes and settings explore post-war England through a satirical lens. This set includes his first published novel, 'Hemlock and After' (1952), as well as two of his short story collections, 'The Wrong Set and Other Stories' (1949) and 'A Bit Off the Map' (1957). 'Hemlock' offers a candid portrayal of gay life in post-World War II England, a seemingly personal theme as Wilson was one of England's first openly gay writers. 'The Wrong Set' is Wilson's first volume of short stories, published in 1949 to immense critical acclaim, offering a satirical exposure of middle-class English people being awful between the wars. 'A Bit Off the Map' contains eight short stories, being Wilson's third collection. He reveals the motives behind the pompous behaviour of his characters and plays with the ironic. With the bookplate of Woodrow Wyatt to the front pastedown of 'A Bit Off the Map&apos. Wyatt was a British politician, author, journalist, close to the Queen Mother, Margaret Thatcher and Rupert Murdoch. For the last twenty years of his life, he was chairman of the state betting organisation, The Tote. His political memoirs offer a more private area of the country's governing and social elite. In the original cloth bindings. With the original dust wrappers, 'The Wrong Set' being price-clipped. Externally, very smart, with slight fading to the spines to 'Wrong Set' and minor shelf wear to all volumes. Bookplate of one Woodron Wyatt to the front pastedown of 'A Bit Off the Map&apos. Dust wrappers are smart, with slight sunning to the spines and edge wear, heaviest to 'Hemlock&apos. With handling marks to the wraps. Chipping and a closed tear to the spine head of 'Hemlock' and to the spine tail of 'Wrong Set&apos. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the very odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper of 'Wrong Set' Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed/Good.
