BARAKA, Amiri (LeRoi JONES)
Autograph Manuscript: Craft & Black Writer
1970s. Manuscript. A handwritten ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT by Baraka consisting of two 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of Paschal's Motor Hotel letterhead, written on rectos only, consisting of advice for African-American writers. Some of his observations: "Difficult for any writer to get below surface to go beyond ready mades + cliches (of form and content) But Blacks more difficult because we are denied a tradition We are forced to learn from others before we even learn from ourselves (schools, media, racism + white supremacy)." Baraka lists various authors and titles that a writer should read and states, "Be in touch w/ the state of the art .. know world literature," after which he lists a number of authors including "The great Irish Writers .. The great Russians .. The great Latin Am. writers." He concludes, "Tell the truth/put yr whole feeling in it/make sense to you + the world/Don't become a 'Ho." The letterhead used is interesting in that Paschal's was where many of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement gathered to discuss their strategy and issues in the 1960s, and its restaurant was one of the first to seat black and white patrons together. Right margins a little ragged. Very Good .

BARAKA, Amiri (LeRoi JONES)
Autograph Manuscript: Naropa Lectures
August 1985. Manuscript. A handwritten ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT titled "Naropa Lectures" by Baraka consisting of 21 pages on both sides of eleven 7-1/4" x 11-3/4" lined sheets stapled in the upper left corner. Baraka's notes for his lectures at Naropa where he taught at Naropa’s Jack Kerouac School during the late 1970s through the 1980s, introducing students to the Black Arts Movement, radical political poetry, and the importance of cultural inclusivity in literature and encouraging students to explore writing that was rooted in activism and cultural critique. These notes cover a wide expanse of Baraka's views on image, metaphor, rhythm, critical realism, the oral tradition, slavery, the Harlem Renaissance, American culture, African-American art and music, and more. Nearly all of the entries are short bursts of thought and not worked out in great detail, likely so that he could remind himself of topics to discuss while lecturing. The last line of the notes is telling: "Defeat Reagan, Preserve the Future!. Left margins a little ragged from being torn from a tablet; last page detached from staple. Near Fine .
