BLACK, Archibald et al.
American Airport Designs - containing 44 prize winning and other drawings from the Lehigh Airports Competition ...
NY, for the Lehigh Portland Cement Company 1930. Quarto publisher's illustrated heavy wrapper (a stain on the front, later cloth spine); 96pp, mostly plates. A more than decent copy.
¶ This is, I believe, the first American book on airport architecture, gathering designs submitted to the country's first such competition. The compiler is confident that there are plenty of new ideas never used in Europe and the schemes range from token crackpot visionary - a circular runway running around the tops of skyscrapers - to beaux-arts, with the bulk falling into classical moderne. Common to all designs chosen for inclusion is a formal layout, with runways, often circular, that range from something like parterre gardens to complex occult symbols; surely evidence that a good beaux-arts education still prevailed. Two designs that have some flashy distinction are by Los Angeles and Florida architects, naturally, with a film set skyscraper and a modernist tower respectively. Both are condemned as unsafe. Maybe interesting now would be tracking down the entries that didn't make the cut - neither Wright's nor Neutra's made the book.

JESSUP, John K., STEVENSON, Adlai, MacLEISH, Archibald, SARNOFF, David, GRAHAM, Billy, et al.
The National Purpose
New York, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1960. Hardcover. 8vo. Dark blue cloth with red spine lettering. vii, 146pp. Very good. Tight and internally fine, the only flaw a lightly-sunned spine; lacks dust jacket. "Life" magazine's renowned editor Henry R. Luce introduces these ten essays, first published in its pages and here the first book edition. The other five contributors are John W. Gardner, Clinton Rossiter, Albert Wohlstetter, James Reston and Walter Lippmann. Contributor's copy, the personal copy of Governor Stevenson (1900-65) sent him by the publisher and hails from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). Stevenson's essay "Extend Our Vision.. to All Mankind" appears on pages 21-35. He folds down the first corner and apparently even reviewed his own essay, for several pencils rules (his typical marking) appear in its margins. Uncommon and a unique family copy. .

[MacLEISH, Archibald] POULIN, Al
Archive of Four Typed Letters Signed (Tlss) and Four Autograph Letters Signed (Alss)to Archibald Macleish
Hamden, CT, 1974 - 1977. Letters. Four handwritten letters and four typed letters, all SIGNED variously in full or as "Al," on different stationery, all addressed to "Mr. MacLeish," totaling 15 pages. Poulin covers much ground including his open-heart surgery, a proposed anthology of American poetry to coincide with the Bicentennial (Poulin had edited the 1971 anthology CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN POETRY), discussion of various forthcoming BOA publications including W. D. Snodgrass's THE FÜHRER BUNKER and Anthony Piccione's ANCHOR DRAGGING for which MacLeish wrote the foreword, comments on what it means to be a poet and the State University of New York at Brockport's The Writer's Forum series (Poulin taught there), as well as much else including MacLeish's effect on Poulin: "I hope you know that you continue to be a profound influence on many of us here-- we who continue to envy your serenity and wisdom and humanity and artistry. Increasingly I believe in some fate, some power outside of us that touches our lives. And in that light I believe your too brief visit to Brockport in 1974 was an act of that power intended to show me the grandeur of your life after so much destruction touched the edges of my life. I am in your debt every day, perhaps more so than you can possibly realize. One typed letter missing the first page. Near Fine Al Poulin (1938 - 1996) was an American poet, translator, and editor noted for his translations of Rainer Maria Rilke's DUINO ELEGIES and THE SONNETS TO ORPHEUS as well as being the founder and publisher of BOA Editions, now in its 50th year of publishing poetry.
