Edward Arber [Ed.]; A. G. Bradley [Intro.], Travels and Works of Captain John Smith. President of Virginia, and Admiral of New England 1580-1631
Edward Arber [Ed.]; A. G. Bradley [Intro.]
Travels and Works of Captain John Smith. President of Virginia, and Admiral of New England 1580-1631
Edinburgh, John Grant, 1910. Leather. Facsimiles of the writings of John Smith, the first English colonial governor in North America The writings of English solider and explorer John Smith. Smith played an important role in the establishment the first permanent English settlement in North American in a colony at Jamestown, Virginia, in the early 17th century. Following A.G. Bradley's critical and biographical introduction to John Smith, and another introduction by Professor Arber that draws on contemporary documents, the reader can find facsimiles of John Smith's books and maps. Includes descriptions of New England, a record of the New England Trials in 1620 and 1622, alongside a general history of Virginia, and Smith's own account of his adventures. Smith's books and maps were important in encouraging and supporting English colonisation of the New World. The last page of volume I is untrimmed, as are several pages near the centre of volume II. In the publisher's original quarter calf binding over red cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine. The cloth colour has faded a little to the top edge of the front boards, and the spine is discoloured on both volumes. A little bumped to the tail of the spine, with some marginal wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some offsetting to the endpapers, pages are bright and clean throughout. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

John Selden; Edward Arber (Ed)
Table Talk 1689 Being the Discourses of John Seldon, Esq; or His Sence of Various Matters of Weight and High Consequence Relating Especially to Religion and State.
London, Alex Murray and Sons, 1868. Paperback. A nice copy of John Selden's work, published posthumously, with two pages of publishers ads to the rear and copy of original title page. Part of the 'English Reprint' series. John Selden (December 16, 1584 – November 30, 1654) was an English jurist, legal antiquary and oriental scholar. It was, however, as a scholar and writer that Selden won his reputation. His first work, an account of the civil administration of England before the Norman Conquest, is said to have been completed when he was only twenty-two or twenty-three. Several of Selden's minor works were published posthoumously, of which Tale Talk is perhaps his best known. Edited by the literary scholar Edward Arber, who is known for his contributions to the 'English Reprint' series. This series, created in the 19th century, aimed to produce accurate reprints of notable works, making them easily accessible to the general public. In a quarter cloth binding, with original paper boards. Externally, sound. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. The off mark to the front and rear boards. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, though the title pages and the odd page loosening slightly. Pages are bright and clean, with no apparent marks.
