Collated complete. This work was written by Anthony Hope, a British novelist and playwright best known for his work 'The Prisoner of Zenda' and its sequel. This work features the fictional character Dolly Foster and her many stories, and provides a picture of the end of the Victorian era. This is also the first work to be fully illustrated by the noted Arthur Rackham, who is regarded to be one of the most important book illustrators of this era. Bound in quarter straight grain morocco with cloth to the boards and the original paper wraps bound in. Externally smart with slight fading to the extremities of the boards and spine and rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of the spine. The work was first published in the influential Liberal newspaper, the Westminster Gazette and later published in book form in 1894. Signed by the author to the half title: 'Yours very truly, Anthony Hope&apos. With the personal bookstamps of Frederick L. Lucas. Dolly Dialogues is a collection of a number of Hope's sketches all of which first appeared in the Westminster Gazette. The sketches act as important social commentary on a range of topical events within London. In a red cloth binding with gilt detail. Externally in excellent condition with just some slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. A few light marks to the board. Personal library stamp to front pastedown. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages and the fore edge. Westminster Gazette. London. 1894. FIRST EDITION, first issue. 8vo. (7.2 x 5.6 inches). Four full page mono plates and front cover illustration by Rackham. This first issue (published July 1894) has "Dolly" as the running headline on the text pages and "price one shilling" at the extreme lower right corner of the front wrapper; subsequent issues have "The Dolly Dialogues" as the running headline and the price is higher up the page. Original pale yellow pictorial wrappers, with dark blue lettering and illustration toned in lighter blue. Some wear and soiling to wrappers, especially on spine, which has had some professional repair work. A few spots of foxing to the page edges but generally a clean copy throughout. Neat armorial bookplate on inside front cover and there is another loosely inserted Rackham-esque bookplate. Housed in a beige cloth covered clam-shell case with gilt lettering to the spine. --- The second published work to feature illustrations by Rackham but the first book to be wholly illustrated by him. -- Riall. pages 2 -3.
