A small hardcover book attractively bound in full red leather with gilt decorations on the boards and spine. Features gilt foredges, five raised bands on the spine, and marbled endpapers with gilt dentelles. Very good condition! Edges rubbed, with the corners just worn through to the cardboard, and top inch of back cover slightly faded. Margins yellowed with age, but otherwise, text unmarked and binding secure. Contains small black and white illustrations at the beginning of each essay. Measures approx. 7.25" x 4.5.

A scarce work, with the vanishingly scarce original unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated throughout. A collection of uniformly elegant and humorous essays on the basic truths of life, including titles such as: On Shaking Hands, A Tale of Fleet Street, On the Top Note, On Big Words, and Naming the Baby, amongst others. Written by Alfred George Gardiner, an English journalist, editor and author whose essays, written under the alias "Alpha of the Plough", are highly regarded. Illustrated by his son Clive Gardiner, a British designer, illustrator, printmaker, painter and teacher. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original unclipped dust wrapper is very smart with sunning to the spine and extremities. The odd small mark to the panels with minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine. This series of table talk books was inspired by and aimed to mimic the conversational pleasantries and debates that occur around the breakfast table. The Professor includes 47 illustrations throughout the text and The Autocrat includes 51, including the front pieces which are monochrome plates. Brock.The Professor has an ink inscription from prior owner to the recto of the first free endpaper.The Essays of Elia, Charles Lamb (1902).This collection of essays first appeared in The London Magazine in 1820. There is some bumping to the heads and tails to the spine resulting in some wear, in particular to 'The Professor&apos. There is minor bumping to the extremities. The boards are slightly marked and faded. The front hinges to 'The autocrat' and 'Pebbles' are starting but firm. 'Elia' has an ink inscription from prior owners to the front pastedown. 'The Professor' has an ink inscription from prior owner to the recto of the first free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
