London, Collins, 1970-1986. First edition. Cloth. A smart collection of first editions by an author of thrillers and adventure fiction, Alistair MacLean. A well presented collection of six first editions, all in the original publisher's cloth binding, with the original, unclipped dust wrappers, with the exception of Partisans, which has been clipped. Scottish novelist, Alistair MacLean was best known for his popular thrillers and works of adventure fiction. Many of his works have been since adapted into film, including The Guns of Navarone (1957) and Caravan to Vaccares (1974). This collection is comprised of Caravan to Vaccares (1970), Seawitch (1977), Goodbye California (1977), Athabasca (1980), Partisans (1982) and Santorini (1986). Caravan to Vaccares is set in the Provence region of France, more specifically to the holy shrine of Saint Sarah. During the annual pilgrimage to this shrine, many strange and deadly things start to happen, with Cecile Dubios and British agent Neil Bowman taking it upon themselves to investigate. Seawitch is slightly different to other works of MacLean, with less mystery and more action. Featuring Lord Worth, a wealthy oil baron who will seemingly stop at nothing to put his competitors out of business. Goodbye California is set in the US, with kidnappings of nuclear scientists setting in motion a big rescue operation to prevent nuclear war. This novel was inspired after MacLean experienced an earthquake in California, likening it to a nuclear explosion. Athabasca depicts adventure and murder, as with many of MacLean's novels. Telling the story of an oil company, MacLean presents an investigation leading to danger and sabotage. Partisans is set during the second world war, featuring Pete Petersen, a Yugoslavian agent whose motives are unclear within the war effort. Santorini was MacLean's final novel, published before a year prior to his death. Similar to MacLean's other adventurous tales, this work features a strategic bomber, nuclear war and a lot of danger. In the original publisher's cloth binding, with the original dust wrappers. All wraps are unclipped, apart from Partisans, which was been clipped. Externally, excellent, with light bumping to the extremities. The odd mark to boards, with light fading to the extremities of Seawitch. Dust wrappers are very smart, with light edge wear and a small tear to Seawitch. The occasional light sunning to spine, with the odd mark. Small label remnants to the spine of Caravan. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Light age toning to Santorini. Near Fine . Ill.: None. Near Fine/Near Fine.
