Typed Letter Signed by American Publisher Alfred A. Knopf Complaining to the Pond Lecture Bureau About Payment for Tickets to a Hugh Walpole Lecture.

New York: 9 March, 1920. 1920. - 90 words typed on a 9-7/8 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of cream-colored Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. letterhead. Signed "Alfred A Knopf". There is a small piece out of the letter to the left of the printed heading where a copy of the reply has been detached. There is a faded date stamp at top right indicating when the letter was answered with some light creasing at bottom left. Folded 3 times for mailing. Together with a carbon copy of the Pond Lecture Bureau's reply. Very good.

Knopf sends the Pond Lecture Bureau [apparently by hand] a check for two tickets for a Hugh Walpole lecture. He writes that when reserving the seats by phone "we distinctly requested that you send them forthwith with a bill and we cannot understand your lack of courtesy in not complying with our request, inasmuch as you know absolutely and perfectly well who we are..". The Bureau replies that it needs to receive payment by the date of the lecture so that it can close up the statement for that day.

American publisher Alfred A. Knopf, Sr. [1892-1984] was the president of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. which he founded in 1915. Very good .

(CARL HAVERLIN,1899-1985, was a noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar, radio pioneer and president of Broadcast Music, Inc.) Scarce collection of tributes published by a group of Knopf's friends called "The Book Table," consisting of "a few each of publishers, booksellers, librarians, authors, designers and producers of books and book materials." Two side-by-side rear flyleaves bear the boldly inked signatures of six of the book's ten contributors: Novelist Carl Van Vechten (who took the frontispiece portrait), critic/essayist Carl Van Doren, H.L.
