The first edition of this biography of the Duke of Wellington, edited by Sir James Edward Alexander and adorned with charming engraved plates. Illustrated with frontispiece as well as eight further plates to vol. I, including folding plan; frontispiece and five further plates to vol. II, including folding plan. Collated, bound without rear map to vol. I. Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, was celebrated for his prolific and successful military career in the Napoleonic Wars; when he died, the nation mourned. He was given a state funeral, becoming one of the few British subjects to have been honoured in this way. Rebound in uniform half calf with titles to morocco spine label. Missing spine label to vol. II. Externally rubbed with bumping to head and tail of spine, rubbed to spine, joints, and extremities of boards. Internally, firmly bound. He visited the Guiana coast, the West India islands (Barbados, Tobago, Trinidad, Grenada, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Cuba), the Mississippi valley and that of the St. Lawrence and the eastern part of the United States. His account .. consists of brief descriptions and keen observations on local life and society. .. The author opposes sudden emancipation and holds that the planters had not been given fair hearings. Supports them as against the abolitionists in a temperate, reasonable manner, an entire chapter being devoted to their defence' (Ragatz p.215).
