Binding in excellent condition with the exception of two minor markings to rear board. Additional title page & frontis plate well age browned.

London, Cadell And Davies, 1803. Hardcover. Plates are dated 1794 but this is likely the 1803 (or 06 or 10) 'new' edition. Title page is missing however. The remainder is in very good order with half title, engraved frontispiece and three further engraved plates. Akenside's poem is preceded with an essay by Mrs Barbauld and the author's explanation of 'the design' of the poem, then the three books and sections of notes on each. Occasional foxing, but in general all in good internal order. Gift inscription from 1843 to fep verso. Advertisement for Mrs Barbauld's other works, in uniform size, to rear. Full leather contemporary binding with marbled endpapers and gilt decoration. Titlepiece missing from spine and some wear to edges and corners. Still a pleasing volume, despite ts deficiencies. 16mo. xxxvi, 156pp, [1] . Good/No Jacket.

The second edition of this work. Without the notes to the tail of page nine that is called for in the first edition, and with the press figure 2 at the tail of page 32. Vignette engraving to the title page. Bound without the half-title. Otherwise, complete, with the final advertisement leaf present. Disbound, with a leather backstrip still present. Signatures run as [3], B-Q4. 'The Pleasures of Imagination' is a long didactic poem. The poem discusses the power of imagination, and how pleasure can be derived from the perception of beauty, how imagination is distinguished from philosophy, and also the pleasure to be found in the study of man. The poem was inspired by Joseph Addison's essays on imagination published in 'The Spectator&apos. Written by Mark Akenside, an English poet, who had the idea from the poem on a 1738 visit to Morpeth. Disbound, with a leather backstrip still present. Externally, the outer leaves with some spotting. Blind stamp to the front outer leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Two volumes bound in one.'The Pleasures of Imagination', by Mark Akenside, the first edition, first printing, with a five line errata to the tail of page 9. ESTC citation number T42493. Half-title present, one leaf of adverts to the rear, and with press figure 1 at the tail of page 32. Page 20 is misnumbered 22.'The Art of Preserving Health', by John Armstrong, the first edition, the issue with the price beneath the imprint to the title page. ESTC citation number T187239. 'The Pleasures of Imagination' is a long didactic poem. The poem discusses the power of imagination, and how pleasure can be derived from the perception of beauty, how imagination is distinguished from philosophy, and also the pleasure to be found in the study of man. The poem was inspired by Joseph Addison's essays on imagination published in 'The Spectator&apos. Written by Mark Akenside, an English poet, who had the idea from the poem on a 1738 visit to Morpeth.'The Art of Preserving Health' was the author's first great poetical success, a masterful poem written in blank verse and dealing with the heavy subject of death, including a passage on the plague. Collated complete. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards resulting in a little loss of paper. Crack to the tail of the front joint, and smaller cracks to the tail of the rear joint and to the head of the joints. Light rubbing to the spine and a small amount of loss to the head and tail. Extremities are bumped. Stamp to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a few scattered spots. Ink note to the head of the half-title of 'Imagination&apos. Ink note to the title page of 'Imagination' and pencil note to the title page of 'Health&apos. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

London, T Cadell and W Davies, 1803. Leather. An illustrated copy of The Pleasures of Imagination by Mark Akenside. With three engraved plates, a frontispiece and a critical essay by Anna Barbauld. Mark Akenside was an English poet and physician. In this, his most famous work, he explores the various kinds of pleasures that can be derived from beauty, and a meditation on the study of Man. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Antoinette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had traveled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. In a full calf binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Joints starting but still reasonably firm. Bookplate of E.H. Greenly on the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
