410, [6]; [8], 168 pp.Ad. 1: One of the many Aesop editions based on the famous first illustrated edition by Jean de Tournes, Lyon 1571, which was a landmark in humanistic scholarship and printing with woodcuts by Bernard Salomon (Bodemann 29.1). The De Tournes family moved to Geneva in 1585 to escape religious persecution as Hugenots. In 1619 Jean de Tournes III sold his house in Lyon to the printer Guichard Juliéron, who probably issued the present edition in Lyon under the name of Jean de Tournes.Ad 2: A rare collection of Greek poetry and other works by Theognis and Phocylides, ideas and thoughts of Pythagoras, and the mottos of Solon. The editor and translator, Fredericus Sylberg (1536-1596) was a classical philologist working as a corrector and editor for the publisher Henr. Commelin at Heidelberg. Ad. 1: with owner’s entry on the front paste-down: "Sum ex libris Hugonis Suchier, Ritelii [= Rinteln], 1881". There are more than a dozen errors in the pagination, but both books are nevertheless complete. Some woodcuts slightly worn, boards slightly damaged. Ad. 2: minor water stains (pp. 115-158).l Ad 1: cf. Bodeman, 29.2. Ad 2: STCN (2 copies).

AESOP. CROXALL (Samuel):
Fables of AEsop and Others: Translated into English. With Instructive Applications; and a print before each fable. The Sixteenth Edition, carefully revised andimprovef
London: Printed for C. Dilly...[inter alia], 1798. 12mo, 168 x 100 mms., pp. xxiv, [xii], 329 [330 - 336 Index], engraved woodcut for each of the 196 fables, recently rebound in half calf, marbled boards, gilt spine, red leather label; corner torn from B1 (pp. 1 - 2) with loss of texts, title-page soiled with contemporary scribbles in ink on verso, other ink scribbles and wear, not a salubrious copy. Given that editions of Croxall's Fables are not exactly uncommon, I am not sure why someone would have spent any money on rebinding the work. Part of a job lot, I offer it as a curiosity.

The Fables of Aesop and Others, Translated Into Human Nature
London, W. Kent & Co, 1857 . First edition. Cloth. The very scarce first edition of Charles H. Bennett's distinctive Victorian-era interpretation of Aesop"s classic fables, illustrated throughout with hand-coloured plates by Bennett himself. Steel to recto of frontispiece.Quayle, in 'Early Children's Books', says this is one of Bennett's finest and most vigorous works, and one of the most notable editions of Aesop's Fables.
