Colonel the Lord Sydenham of Combe; Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon; General Sir Frederick Maurice; General Sir W. D. Bird; Sir Charles Oman
The World Crisis by Winston Churchill: A Criticism
London, Hutchinson & Co. 1927. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of this analysis of Winston Churchill's 'The World Crisis', signed by Sir Reginald Bacon. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Loosely inserted is a small slip stating 'Collection of Steve Forbes', the American publishing executive and politician who is the editor-in-chief of the magazine Forbes. Inscribed by Sir Reginald Bacon to a Major General and Lord Lieutenant, to the verso of the front free end paper. The handwriting is a little difficult to decipher, but it may be addressed to Major-General J. E. B. Seely, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. Seely was Secretary of State for War prior to the First World War, and a friend of Winston Churchill. He led one of the great cavalry charges at the Battle of Moreuil Wood in 1918. A critical analysis of this important and highly acclaimed first-hand account of the war, written by Churchill before his fame as the wartime Prime Minister. This work chiefly examines Volume III, in which Churchill provides an analysis of Haig's strategy, but also the Dardanelles campaign. This work was written by a variety of distinguished critics, including Colonel the Lord Sydenham of Combe, Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon, General Sir Frederick Maurice, General Sir W. D. Bird and Sir Charles Oman. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Slightly faded to the spine, with a small section of fading to the top of the front board. 6cm tear to the tail of the rear joint. Small tear to the tail of the front joint. Small losses to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting to the paste downs and end papers. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
