Anthony R. Martin and Ian Collinson.
The finest drinks: John Martin's story. From London to ... 1909-2009.
No place, Anthony R. Martin, 2009. Boudn hardcover with orog. dustjacket (protected with removable cellophane), 367pp., 25x32cm., richly illustr. in col. and b/w., in very good condition. This is an anniversary book about brands that have become legends in the world of trademarks. It features more than 1100 documents in a visual journey through the 20th century, an era during which communication revolutionised all areas of society. It is a book about brands that played a key role in all forms of expression during that century: graphics, fashion, photography, cinema, design. Brands that succeeded through the art of seduction via a stunning gallery of 'Mademoiselles' that were prevalent between 1909 and 2009: Neo-symbolist, Modern Style, Art Deco, Contemporary Art. Brands that benefited from some of the most creative advertising agencies in the world working for a company that was one of the first to have its own agency and which sponsored sports in which exclusivity and refinement were the raison d'etre. Brands that succeeded in linking up the to the great trend-setting ideas of the century, products that attracted some of the most talented artists. This book also depicts an unusual family saga that covers a century of commercial ventures and successes. When he arrived in Belgium in 1909, exactly one hundred years ago, the famous British master brewer John Martin declared "Only connoisseurs can appreciate beers like mine". Over the space of one century, three generations of "The Finest Drinks Company" have taken us on a fabulous journey through the world of totally surprising beverages. Today, each second, day and night, two of our most delicious beers are savoured by lovers of fine ale somewhere in the world. Thanks to a unique blend of English tradition, Belgian savoir-faire and a dose of audacity, our special beers are treasures that we would just like you to discover! 2009 will be an exhilarating anniversary for our company and we are proud to welcome you to our crew as we enter together this second century! / John Martin is the name of a beer brewery in Genval (Walloon Brabant), Belgium, founded in 1909 by English businessman John Martin (1886-1966). A family company, it is currently run by his grandson, Anthony Martin. Besides brewing Belgian-style ales, the company also imports British and Irish beers, and produces soft drinks for Schweppes under license. It is the oldest Guinness distributor in the world. In 1993 the company bought Timmermans Brewery, a lambic beer brewery from Itterbeek founded in 1702. In 2015, the company opened the new Brasserie de Waterloo at Mont Saint Jean. In 2016, it opened the Bourgogne des Flandres brewery in Bruges.(wikipedia).

Campbell, R and Collinson, D.
Ending lives.
Oxford, Open University. 1988. Hardcover. Good. l 203 pp. This book addresses the sensitive and complex issues of suicide and euthanasia. It examines the apparent contradiction that those who, in general terms, hold killing people to be wrong may well believe suicide or euthanasia to be morally justifiable, even though they are both cases of killing people. This in turn raises complex questions of subjectivism: is life just about the pursuit of happiness and the avoidance of suffering, or about doing what people want?
