Rotterdam, Ph.Losel, 1724. 8vo. W. engr. front. & 1 engr. fold. plan. In a contemporary richly gilt light brown full marbled clf., spine in 6 compartments, intricate central ornament and richly decorated borders. (Top and bottom of spine some imperf.; corners bumped, upper 2 corners rubb/dam.; half of upper outer hinge splitting.). [*8, **8, ***2, A - Z8, Aa8, Bb2]. (XXXVI, 387, I (blank) pp.). (All edges gilt. and gauffered.). [Binding from the workshop named 'Crescent Moon Bindery', see note below]. De Luxe large paper copy on extra quality paper bound in a superb binding from one of the workshops / binding ateliers identified by Jan Storm van Leeuwen in his 'Dutch decorated Bookbindings', see vols. IIA, p. 448f and idem vol. III, p. 730; Crescent Moon Bindery [c.1717 - 1729?]. 'A small group of 4 marbled calf bindings is discussed here ... [they] do not have particularly many tools in common, there are enough of them to indicate that they come from a single workshop, which will have had a very limited production of luxury work. ... The third binding (L824) is known to me by an illustration and a description in a catalogue only [!!!]. Apparently a contemporary note states that it is one of 6 large paper copies. This book Kornelis van Alkemade's Rotterdamse Heldendaden... may also have been a presentation copy, bound on commission of author or publisher on behalf of someone who was interested in the publication of the book. ..'. There may have been contact with the 'Stag Bindery', which is indicated by the use of variants of tools used by this bindery.
