COLLMAN, RUSS; MCCOY, DELL A. ET AL.
The R-G-S Story, Rio Grande Southern: Volumes I Through XII (Complete Twelve Volume Set)
Denver: Sundance Publications, Limited, 1990-2006. Hardcover. ISBN: 0913582581. A complete, hefty 12-volume set, detailing the history of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. The railroad was the final narrow gauge line to be built in Colorado, starting in 1890. The trains served the mines and towns of southwestern Colorado, generally south of Montrose in Ridgway, Telluride, Rico, Dolores, and Durango. Being some of the most challenging, steep terrain in the Colorado Rockies, the RGS had to construct numerous bridges and trestles. This portfolio of historic and modern photos in black & white and color tells the story of the power units, rolling stock, people, buildings and spectacular scenery along the way in San Juan Mountains. Also includes several maps (including folded maps at rear of vol. VII and X) and numerous schematic drawings of bridges and buildings. The series was begun by Russ Collman and Dell A. McCoy but later installments were authored by several additional contributors. Vol. VII numbered 1296 and signed on half title by McCoy, Collman, and contributor W. George Cook. --- In paper-covered boards with color images to front and rear panels, and backed in black leatherette with titling in silver to spine. Each volume about 496 pages and each protected in clear plastic wrapper. --- A clean, tightly-bound, bright set lacking damages worthy of mention. (NOTE: Due to the excessive weight of these books, extra shipping charges may be requested. Shipment likely in multiple packages.); Small Quarto - 9 to 11 in. tall. Near Fine .

Esther McCoy 122627, Barbara Goldstein 293990
Arts & Architecture. The Entenza Years
MIT Press, 1990. Hardcover. Pp: 248. This anthology brings together seminal articles from one of America's most distinguished architecture magazines, copies of which are now extremely difficult to locate. Published and edited by John Entenza from 1938 until 1962, when he left to direct the Graham Foundation, Arts & Architecture played a significant role both in Los Angeles's cultural history and in the development of American modernism in general. Arts & Architecture was the first American magazine to popularize the work of Hans Hofmann, Craig Ellwood, Margaret DePatta, George Nakashima, Bernard Rosenthal, Charles Eames, Konrad Wachsmann, and many others. It also embodied the highest standard of graphic design attained by an American art magazine of its time, employing the talents of such designers as Alvin Lustig, Herbert Mattes, and John Follis.Arts & Architecture: The Entenza Years maintains the large format of the magazine and includes many fullscale reproductions of the original pages. It brings together articles from the years 1943 through 1959, publishing them exactly as they appeared. In keeping with Entenza's tireless advocacy of modernism in all its aspects, the articles cover design, architecture, photography, music, and visual arts. They explore the culture that led to the famous Case Study House program, and feature industrialized and postwar tract housing, as well as houses designed by the Case Study House architects during the same era as the program. There is an introduction by the editor Barbara Goldstein and an essay on John Entenza by Esther McCoy, who wrote for Arts & Architecture through most of Entenza's period as editor. Barbara Goldstein is Planning Coordinator for the Los Angeles Endowment for the Arts, a program of the City of Los Angeles, Cultural Affairs Department. She was publisher and editor-in-chief of Arts & Architecture magazine from 1981 to 1985. ISBN: 9780262071314. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
