The second edition, published the same year as the first. Very scarce in any early edition. Signed by the author, with the inscription 'Susan Agnew With love from Alan Herbert', dated February 1925. Written by English humorist, novelist and MP, Sir Alan Patrick Herbert. A poignant novel, drawing on the author's own experiences as a junior infantry officer during the First World War. In particular, Herbert's time spent on the Gallipoli Peninsula, with this novel being the earliest example to contain a detailed description of this campaign.A markedly different tone from Herbert's other work, which tended to be of a lighter and more amusing nature. 'The Secret Battle' has been praised for his accurate and moving depiction of the mental effects of the war.Bookplate of H. C. C. Newnham. Bound in the publisher's cloth. Externally, generally smart, with light bumping to the extremities. A small tear to the center of the front joint. Fading to the spine and light marks to boards, heavier to rear.
