BEEDOME, THOMAS & FRANCIS MEYNELL (EDITOR), Poems. Divine and Humane.
BEEDOME, THOMAS & FRANCIS MEYNELL (EDITOR)
Poems. Divine and Humane.
London: The Nonesuch Press, 1928. First Edition; First Impression. Original vellum. Deckle edges, somewhat soiled. Covers & spine somewhat smudged, discoloured & worn (see pictures) but gilt stamp still shiny. ; Limited edition. Number 1238 of 1250. Deckle edges, somewhat soiled. Covers & spine somewhat smudged, discoloured & worn (see pictures) but gilt stamp still shiny. ; 20.1 x 12 x 0.7 cms; v, 51 pages; Poems Divine and Humane is the posthumous 1641 collection of Thomas Beedome, an English poet who died young, likely around 1640–41. The volume was edited by Henry Glapthorne and includes commendatory verses from various contemporaries, highlighting Beedome's literary promise. The collection is divided into two main sections: "humane" poems and "divine" poems. The "humane" section comprises a narrative poem titled The Jealous Lover, or, The Constant Maid, written in six-line stanzas, followed by songs, epistles, epigrams, elegies, and devotional poems. Notably, two epigrams are addressed to Sir Henry Wotton, another to George Wither, and others to friends such as William Harrington and Captain Thomas James. These poems reflect Beedome's engagement with his contemporaries and his literary environment. The "divine" section includes meditations on life, God, and death, drawing inspiration from poets like George Herbert. Beedome's religious poems are characterized by their introspective and contemplative nature. The collection as a whole showcases Beedome's versatility, encompassing themes of love, friendship, death, and spirituality. Despite his early death, Beedome's work was appreciated by his peers, and his poems were later included in anthologies of seventeenth-century poetry. His ability to blend personal emotion with broader themes of human experience has earned him a place among the lesser-known yet noteworthy poets of his time.. Good+ with no dust jacket .

A DICKENS FRIENDSHIP Told in His Own Letters. With Notes by W. M.
(n. p.): Privately Printed, 1931. 1st Edition, Limited to 75 copies. Not in Gimbel. Parchment wrappers, with printed paper title label to front cover. Grey cloth chemise, with gilt stamped title lettering to one edge. [4], 66, [2] pp. Letters printed letterpress, recto only. Meynell's occasional commentary printed verso, opposite the letter in question. 8vo. 10-1/4" x 6-1/2". Minor wear & soiling, age-toning. A VG+ copy in a VG chemise. Dickens, at the mature age of 32, was enraptured with young Christana Weller, not yet 19, on him first hearing her efforts at the piano, while attending a reception at the Liverpool Mechanic's Institution, February 1844. Herein are letters, primarily from the mid-1840s, documenting his future relationship with the "god-child of whom he was proud". Christina would marry Dickens' friend, T. J. Thompson, with their daughter, Alice, becoming Mrs Wilfrid Meynell. Weller's sister, Anna, would be the future bride of Frederic Dickens, Charles' younger brother. NB. This is the first publication of these letters, about which Meynell states, "Long has the world of readers given him [Dickens] their admiration as an author; and now at last these Letters we know him as a man greatly loving, and therefore greatly to be loved." Uncommon piece of Dickensiana, first time we've been able to offer a copy.

The Week-End Book
London, The Nonesuch Press, 1924. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of this entertaining and truly miscellaneous anthology filled with poems, songs, games, culinary advice, and more, published by the private Nonesuch Press. The first edition of the work, with no further editions nor impressions stated. Published by the Nonesuch Press. The Nonesuch Press was a private press founded in 1922 in London by Francis Meynell, his second wife, Vera Mendel, and their mutual friend, David Garnett. Nonesuch was rather unique among private presses in its choice to use a small hand press to design books, and print them through a commercial printers, a choice which they made with the aim to make fine-press quality book designs cheaper, and thus accessible to a wider audience. With the contemporary previous owner's inscription to the recto of the initial half title page at the front of the work.  This is a wonderful copy of the Nonesuch Press' best selling title, The Week-End Book. An immensely popular work, this anthology was designed to give a middle-brow reader tit-bits of knowledge and conversation pieces pertaining to a wide range of topics, and thus collects into one volume poetry, songs, games, culinary tips, and first aid advice. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with one or two light handling marks and some rubbing and bumping, heaviest to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. Internally, firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages, barring light age toning and the odd spot. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
