printed for S Buckley in Amen Corner, 1732, 1st edition. Full panelled calf, G+. [vi]+350pp, engraved devices on tp & after the last page of text, headpieces, old worm holes in the bottom margin throughout which very occasionally reach the printed text but with the meaning clear, hinges cracked, and spine ends rubbed. ESTCT 85806. Hardback , no dustjacket.
¶ A collected edition of three works attacking what Edmund Gibson [ 1669 - 1748 ] Bishop of London, saw as a rise in 'Profaneness and Impiety' in the people of London. Gibson believed this was caused by an increase in books which attacked Christianity, so his answer was to write three letters to the people of London, containing 'Rules and Cautions' designed to strengthen the faith of 'sincere and unprejudic'd Christians' and to preserve them 'from these dangerous Infections'. Individually they were published in large amounts ( a total of 74000 copies of the first 3 were printed ) but this collected edition had a print run of just 3000 copies.

[GIBSON (Dr. Edmund) Bishop of London.]
The Case of the Methodists Briefly Stated; More particularly in the Point of Field-Preaching.
[London: Printed for Edward Owen, 1744]. Folio, (310 x 190mm), 4pp., caption title, typographical ornament headpiece, cont. MS note in ink "By W. Rackstrow", disbound. By 1744 the Methodist Societies had become so successful that Dr. Edmund, the Bishop of London, resorted to anonymous attacks aimed at Whitefield and his supporters. Here he endeavours to prove that field-preaching violates the provisions of the Toleration Art, and because of the size of his congregations, Whitefield's preaching in the open air was a serious danger to the state. Rare. ESTC & OCLC locates 2 copies in the British Isles (BL & NLS) and 3 in North America (Duke, Newberry & Chicago).
