It was during this time that politics saw the rise of opposing parties with the Tories and the Whigs, and the Radicals.'The Tory Baronet' was a highly acclaimed novel when first published.Written by John Wilks, died in 1846, a lawyer, writer, politician, and swindler. He was charged with forgery in 1828, later being acquitted, and years later fleeing due to debts. He wrote for 'The Standard', and exploited companies throughout his career. His other works include 'A Christian Biographical Dictionary', 'Memoirs of Queen Caroline', and 'Bianca&apos. Wilks' father, of the same name, was a Whig politican.Bookplate of Robert H. Alexander to the front pastedowns. Robert Henry Alexander, 1838-1901, lived in Brandfold in Kent. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. A little rubbing to the bards and spines, including to the spine label of Volume I. Light bumping to the extremities. Spines are a little faded. Some minor marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
