Ballingdon: Michaelmas Term, 1767 . 0. Certified extract examined with the entry at the Kings Silver Office, Court Temple (made in January 2nd, 1793), and signed W. Daw. - Relating to transfer of five messuages in Ballingdon, from Roger & Mary Wood, to Michael Wood & Roger Prickle. Small sheet of paper with some creasing and small tear to one edge. A search on the internet has provided details of another document: Handwritten English vellum indenture dated 1767 during the reign of King George III being the conveyance of property in Ballingdon in the County of Essex between Roger Wood, a Currier, and his wife Mary, both of Bury St Edmunds, and Roger Prickle, a Gentleman, and Michael Wood, Cabinet Maker. [CHINA - WOOD PANEL WITH ANCIENT COINS AND CHARMS]., China, probably end of 18th century.
[CHINA - WOOD PANEL WITH ANCIENT COINS AND CHARMS].
China, probably end of 18th century.
. Wooden panel (59 x 35 cm) with 25 bronze casts of ancient Chinese coins and amulets inserted. A solid piece of wood with small scratches and minor wear, parts of old Chinese label on reverse. Mounted in a later wooden frame. The collection shows examples of old coins and charms in the shape of spades, knives, rings, and two large symbolic figures: a horse and two birds in a tree. China was one of the first countries to use metal coinage and its ancient coin history can be traced back more than two thousand years. The Chinese also produced "coin-like" charms and talismans which were used to suppress evil spirits and to bring "good luck" or "good fortune". During the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC) some of the first forms of money were cast in the shapes of tools, for example as spades, shovels or knives. Thereafter the "round money" appeared and during the Han Dynasty a round shaped coin named "wu zhu" was introduced. It was minted for more than 700 years from 118 BC to 618 AD. This panel contains nine spade-shaped coins or charms which we believe are the earliest examples in the collection. Two pieces have the knife shape. Three large examples of "open charms" are included with illustrations of a dragon, the zodiac and the eight trigrams. In addition there are seven pieces of different kinds of round coins or charms and two pendant charms, all decorated with different characters and symbols. We believe that the panel dates from the latter part of the 18th century and sits firmly in the context of the Emperor QianlongÕs unequalled obsession with Chinese history, art and literature. Reigning from 1735 to 1796, he created and conserved unparalleled collections of all ages and aspects of Chinese culture while honouring Manchu and Confucian traditions. This panel, with a patina consistent with its (likely) date, was probably used as a teaching aid, and reflects the EmperorÕs interest in promoting and preserving the glories and utility of the Chinese past. A most unusual and impressive work.

[JEMMY WOOD]
Rewards. £2000!! Will of James Wood, Esq. Deceased... signed by Henry H. Wilton, Town Clerk. [with] The Life and Anecdotes of Jemmy Wood, the Eccentric Banker, Merchant, & Draper, or Gloucester. Also an Account of the Remarkable Trial with Reference to his Will.
Gloucester: Walkers, printers, 1836. Large poster, 760 x 500 mm. The book is worn. A rare reward poster relating to a celebrated case regarding James Wood's will. Wood died in 1836 and was buried in St Mary de Crypt Church in Gloucester where there is a gravestone to his memory in the chancel. The crowd at his funeral reportedly "...evinced a levity of demeanor inconsistent with the solemnity of the occasion" and his coffin was said to have been stoned. Problems over his will led to a long court case that soaked up much of the funds in the estate. Wood never married and had no children He left around £900,000 to be shared equally between Sir Matthew Wood, John Chadborn (Solicitor), Jacob Osborne and John S. Surman, who were also his executors. A damaged codicil was found that left money to the City of Gloucester and to other beneficiaries and it was wrangling over the authenticity of the codicil that caused the settlement of the estate to be delayed. Chadborn hanged himself in 1839 and the obituary notice in The Gentleman's Magazine noted that since Wood's death, Chadborn's attention had "been almost wholly engrossed with the proceedings consequent upon the disputed validity of the will."
