Engraving from the book of George Alexander Cooke, Modern and authentic System of Universal Geography, Volume I, London 1801. Book 1 is mostly extracts from James Cook's journal encompassing voyages in the Friendly Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, New Zealand and New Holland. After the famous painting of George Stubbs (1724-1806): the Kongouro from New Holland, the first painting of an Australian animal in Western art. Commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks. Cooke wrote after seeing a kangaroo on 24 june 1770: I saw my self this morning a little way from the ship one of the Animals before spoke off, it was of a light Mouse colour and the full size of a grey hound and shaped in every respect like one. On august 4 1770 Cooke mentions this animal the Kangooroo or Kanguru.
