'It is easy to say that the two countries have a lot in common. This book attempts to bring that nebulous statement into sharp focus, to define the commonality of history, trade, technology and shared values. Their purpose was to promote New Zealand exporters, businesses, lifestyle, landscape, arts etc. Sometime they also featured other countries such as the USA, Australia, and Singapore. The firms involved with each publication recieved the finished book to give out to clients, particularly foreign clients, as a means of promoting New Zealand achievements and potential. Allen, Grant [Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, ed.]
Hilda Wade; a Woman with Tenacity of Purpose
New York City, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1900. First American edition. Hardcover. pp. x, 383. 8vo. Bound in original olive green cloth. Well-illustrated by the noted artist Gordon Browne, showing the heroine in the fashions of the day. Hinges taped with masking tape (by a prior owner), boards show very light rubbing at the edges and light soiling. There is a very small red stain towards the bottom of the front board. The book is slightly off-set, or cocked. Contents clean, binding sound. With 98 b&w illustrations by Gordon Browne and five pages of publisher's ads at the end of the book. Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (1848-1899) was born in Kingston, Ontario. At age 13, Allen and his parents moved to the United States. He won a scholarship to Merton College, Oxford (1867-1871), from which he was graduated with a B.A. During 1873-1876, he was professor of mental and moral philosophy in a new college at Spanish Town, Jamaica. After this institution failed, he returned to England, where he pursued writing as a profession. He was perhaps better known as an author of scientific and philosophical books, although he produced over 30 works of fiction, from which most of his income was generated. 'Hilda Wade' is Allen's final work, and all but the last chapter had been completed by the time of his death. His close friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, gathered up Allen's notes and completed the final chapter, which effort the publisher acknowledged in a prefatory note. This book is a very early example of a mystery novel with a woman detective as the central character. This copy is the first American edition. It was also published in London by Grant Richards. Ill.: Gordon Browne illustrations.

In Fairyland: A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World
London, Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, 1870 . First edition. Cloth. A lovely first edition copy of Richard Doyle and William Allingham's beautifully illustrated fairy tales, illustrated throughout with Doyle's plates. The first edition of this beautifully illustrated work from Richard Doyle, with his charming plates accompanying a whimsical poem from William Allingham.Illustrated with sixteen bright full colour plates from Richard Doyle. The frontispiece has been missbound following plate V. Collated, complete.Richard Doyle, the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was a popular Victorian illustrator. Training under his father, the political cartoonist John Doyle, the young Richard Doyle would join the famous 'Punch' magazine aged 19. Entrusted with designing the masthead for the magazine, his design would feature on the cover of 'Punch' for almost a century. Though a prolific illustrator, he was know for being incredibly unreliable, once nearly loosing a commission to illustrate Thackeray's 'The Newcomes', due to consistent tardiness. This contributed to his limited successes during his lifetime.First Edition. Published in 1869, yet volumes were post-dated 1870, (JISC).'In Fairyland' is widely considered Doyle's finest work. Showcasing the depth of Doyle's talents and imagination, this work paints a charming picture of the magical 'elf-land', sure to capture the imagination of adults and children alike. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Rebacked, with original back strip laid down, retaining original endpapers. Bumping to spine head and tail. Light rubbing to board perimeters and tail of rear joint, resulting in a touch of fraying to the cloth. Rear hinge and head of front hinge starting, with boards holding firm. Bookplate to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece missbound following plate V. Pages generally clean and bright, with some instances of light spotting to plate perimeters. Very Good . Ill.: Richard Doyle. Very Good .
