The Jewish American actress Rose Eytinge (1835-1911) performed on stage with Edwin Booth in "The Fool's Revenge" and toured with him and others. President Lincoln invited her to the White House after attending her performances. She first married the newspaperman and author David M. Barnes and subsequently Colonel George H. Butler, the U.S. Consul General to Egypt but divorced him for his abusive behavior and infidelities. She returned to New York to resume her career with the Union Square Theatre Company and, drawing on her Egyptian experiences, played her most famous role, that of Shakespeare's "Cleopatra". She is rumored to have been the first American actress to earn a three figure salary. Good .
