[papermaking sample book] Masaki UnryÅ«shi æ­£æoe¨ 雲é¾�ç´™ Inogami Kabushiki Kaisha 伊野紙株å¼�会社 [Shikoku] C. 1950's-60's 15 x 22.5cm oblong, ribbon-bound collection of Japanese paper samples from the Inogami Paper company, Inogami Kabushiki Kaisha 伊野紙株å¼�会社, on Shikoku Island. UnryÅ«shi 雲é¾�ç´™ [Cloud Dragon Paper] is a wonderful translucent tissue of varying thicknesses creating patterns, such as squares, circles (e.g. suidama 水玉, rain drops), lines and abstract florals, as well as pierced patterns. Each pattern has a name, category (e.g. chirashi ã�¡ã‚‰ã�—, leaflet) or number printed on it and some are backed with brown paper inserted between the folded sheets. Introduction in Japanese text. Approximately 100 samples are in this book, issued most probably in the late 1950's or 1960's. The Inogami Paper Company was established in June of 1948 and appears to still be producing art papers and other paper products today. Interesting to note that a recent CEO of the company also has the surname Masaki æ­£æoe¨. The printed cover is creased but the papers are clean and remarkable. .

Kyoto, Sawada Shoten [190-?]. 23x16cm publisher's cloth (discoloured) with bone clasp; 100 silk samples in accordian folding heavy printed card mounts. With another defective sample book with 30 of 32 samples of dyed cottons.
¶ Finely grained, creped and patterned silks for kimonos. The name Sawada is still connected with kimonos in Kyoto but I can't trace any relationship. The current Sawada Shoten in Kyoto sells work clothes and was founded in 1968.

Victorian Calling and Greeting Card Sample Book.

[c. 1900]. Small 8vo (175 x 135 mm), 28 pages containing 83 calling and greeting card samples with type examples pasted on to rear pastedown, apparently complete with a weak binding showing moderate to heavy wear and one tear to the back strip; pages toned, several leaves detached. Samples generally very good or better. A collection of Victorian calling and greeting card samples from an unknown stationer. Nearly all are embossed and many have prices printed on the samples. There are also numerous examples of die-cut overlays that one lifts to reveal what's underneath. The most common topic is love, with many Valentine-like cards showing cherubs, birds and flowers. Two cards are surrounding by silk ribbon. There is a wonderful "imp" business card substituting a graphic for the word "devil" in the phrase, "who the devil are you? " There's a masonic card, Easter cards and an interesting "Gold escort" card used by suitors to woo the ladies: two images on a gold background show a man and woman walking together with the words, "FAIR LADY: I send you this beautiful chromo with my compliments. If I may be the happy youth on the promenade please retain it. If I must suffer misery on the fence, be so good as to return it." If it was returned, did he use the same card again? A diverse, ornate and colourful example of the late 19th century stationer s art.

Wine Labels - Sample Book. Myncke Freres, Brussels.

The printer's sample album of wine labels by Myncke Freres of Brussels.

n.p. 1930s. Oblong quarto (230x315mm) flexible linen album with some 220 lithograph labels plus some neck labels and vintage dates (ranging from 1915 to 1937) mounted on both sides of 31 leaves. Nothing removed and all in great shape.
¶ This is an album to be shown to clients rather than a scrap book. There are numbers of labels for specific wineries and appellations, numbers more are for generic varieties or, in some case, unlettered altogether. All are signed Litho Myncke or initialled LM or MF. The Mynckes seem to have made something of a specialty of wine - a rummage round the internet finds a couple of large posters for champagne - and this album shows they had a fair reach across western Europe - France, Belgium, into Germany and includes some Port labels in English. The styles also range around, from the classic and restrained (it's hard to beat a modicum of gold on glazed midnight blue) to vibrantly modern to garish kitsch.
